Melissa/Lemon Balm Essential Oil Melissa Officinalis
The genus Melissa comes from the Greek word for honey bee. The flowers of the lemon balm plant attract honey bees when it is in bloom.
The oil is known for its soothing effects. It has also been used as an addition to insect repellants.
Source: Melissa Officinalis is grown mainly in Italy.
Extraction: Melissa essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and tops of the lemon balm plant.
Aroma: Melissa essential oil has a sharp, floral, lemon flavour and scent.
Fragrance note: Top to Middle.
Properties: Melissa essential oil has a soothing but uplifting effect on the mind and body. It is a comforting oil during the cold season. It is known as â€˜The Female Oilâ€™ and when added to a bath or used in massage it may relieve symptoms of PMT.
In aromatherapy, it is used for managing feelings of depression and stress.
Uses: Massage, baths and vaporization.
Blends well with: Basil, Citrus oils, Chamomile, Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender, Neroli, Petitgrain, Rose Maroc and Ylang Ylang.
Caution: Melissa essential oil may cause skin irritation and should be diluted to 1% for massaging. Use only 3 drops in a bath.
