Pinus sylvestris
Pine was used by the ancient Greeks and Romans for respiratory problems and muscular aches, as it still is in saunas throughout Scandinavia. Historically the needles were burnt to drive away insects, infections and clean rooms of germs.
Source: Pinus sylvestris is grown commercially in Western Europe.
Extraction: Pine essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the needles, cones and twigs of the Pine tree.
Aroma: The pure essential oil has a very strong balsamic, camphor-like smell, similar to crushed pine needles.
Fragrance note: Middle.
Properties: Pine essential oil is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiseptic, antiviral, bactericidal, balsamic, decongestant, deodorant, disinfectant, insecticide and stimulant.
Uses: Massage, bath, inhalation and poultice. For a cough or blocked nose, once diluted in a carrier oil, massage into the chest.
Rub into aching joints.
Added to a bath it improves circulation and relieves muscular pain.
Used undiluted on a damp cloth, it makes an effective household disinfectant for the bathroom or to deodorise shoes.
Blends well with: Bergamot, Cedarwood, Clary Sage, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Grapefruit, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Niaouli, Peppermint, Ravensara, Rosemary, Sage, Sandalwood, Tea Tree and Thyme.
