Mentha piperita
Mint was prized in Japan and China for centuries and has been found in Egyptian tombs dating back to 1000 BC. Traditionally, it was ingested as a tea or the leaves were chewed to cure complaints of the stomach or nerves.
Source: Mentha piperita is cultivated in Britain, America, Europe and China, but grows world-wide.
Extraction: Peppermint essential oil is extracted from the fresh or semi-dried leaves and flowers of the herb.
Aroma: Peppermint essential oil is fresh, very minty, hot, herbaceous, with a vegetative back note.
Fragrance note: Top.
Properties: Pure Peppermint essential oil is nearly one third menthol, which is why it invigorates, decongests, stimulates and is soothing, refreshing and cooling.
In aromatherapy, peppermint essential oil is used with vaporization to relieve headaches, mental fatigue and feelings of nausea. In massage it is used to ease muscular pain, digestive problems and PMT symptoms. It can be applied to cool sunburn and sooth insect bites.
Uses: Massage, baths, vaporization, inhalation and compress.
Blends well with: Basil, Benzoin, Black Pepper, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Grapefruit, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Niaouli, Pine, Ravensara, Rosemary and Tea Tree.
Caution: Peppermint essential oil is very potent, so never apply undiluted to skin, or just before going to sleep. Use sparingly for massage or in the bath. Always ensure proper dilution.
